Genetic Health Testing

Discover how your unique genetic variations are affecting your general health & fitness and what diet and lifestyle changes you can make to support your genes.

Our bodies are all genetically different. We have the ability to influence the expression of our genes through our diet & lifestyle.

Why consider Genetic Testing?

While we can’t change our genetics (our genes are our genes for life) we can alter they way our genes are expressed by what we eat, how we sleep, exercise and manage our stress. Other external factors such as environmental toxins also have an impact.

These health screenings include selected genes that give us a snapshot of your genetics and enable me to give you targeted health advice.

Knowing the genetic variations you have in your physiological pathways can help manage or prevent the development of health conditions you are experiencing or which you have a predisposition for.

There are a number of different genetic tests available depending on what your health issues and goals are.

  • The Fitgenes ‘Health & Wellbeing’ Report - looks at the genes associated with cell defence, inflammation, Vitamin D Receptors, Vitamin B12, methylation and homocysteine metabolism, cardiovascular health and fat/cholesterol metabolism.

  • The Fitgenes ‘CarbChoice’ Report - shows how many copies of the AMY1 gene you have and therefore indicates the ability of your body to process starchy carbohydrates. This is useful for those that are having difficulty managing their weight or have or are at risk of developing diabetes.

  • The Fitgenes ‘Food Choice’ Report - checks for your genetic risk of intolerances/sensitivities including - coeliac risk, lactose intolerance, alcohol intolerance, caffeine sensitivity, salt sensitivity and histamine intolerance.

How having a Carb Choice Test helped me manage my hypoglycaemia!

I had been a ‘hungry’ person ever since I could remember! I had to eat several regular meals a day and if I missed or delayed a meal I would get shaky, ‘hangry’, fatigued and feel like my head was in a vice. Years of shift work, with irregular meals and sleeping patterns, just made things worse. I suffered blood sugar crashes, had a constant ‘gnawing’ sensation in my stomach and literally felt like I was being eaten from the inside out. Over time I started to notice that I felt worse when I ate foods like breads, pastas, cakes and processed carbohydrates.

When I receive my Fitgenes CarbChoice results back, my report showed that I had a lower number of copies of the AMY1 gene which was affecting my ability to break down these carbohydrates. The detailed report showed me what I should eat and what foods I should avoid as well as the best type of exercise for my body. Now that I know how to eat for my body, I no longer experience hypoglycaemic episodes and find my weight easier to manage!
